Structural Cracks and Corrosion

Crack propagation and corrosion will both produce an acoustic signal.  AE has been used in may structural applications to investigate or monitor the propagation and origin of these defects.  Applications span large networked arrays which can give spacial location of a defect down to single point monitoring of a present or projected crack site.

This technique is an area of growing interest which encompasses both civil and mechanical engineering structures such as:
  • Buildings and foundation blocks
  • Bridge structures, structural nodes and anchor points
  • Structural towers and piles
  • Large scale machines and capital assets such as tank farms
  • Airframes (where many AE techniques find their origin)

Did you know that the London Eye uses Holroyd AE transducers to monitor the main wheel bearings and cable anchor point integrity?  Proof of our capability to monitor slow rotating shafts!

The benefit of Structural Health Monitoring is being increasingly recognised as a means of safely extending the useful life. Monitoring also plays an effective role where integrity may have been compromised by overloading, foundation movement, earthquake or suspected component weakness.

We are AE but not structural specialists. Typically we supply MHC Smart Senors and data capture systems to Structural Engineers and NDT specialists for use in this application.

As one of the structural monitoring tools available, the Acoustic Emission technique has some unique attributes in that it can sensitively detect subtle frictional movement, corrosion and crack extension at some distance from its origin. Relying on the structure as the wave guide to transmit the naturally generated stress waves from their source to the AE sensor the technique is equally relevant to monitoring internal problems where access cannot be readily gained and other technologies may not be suited. Multiple AE sensors are used to discriminate against unwanted sources of activity and focus attention on regions of interest.
