As one of the structural monitoring tools available, the Acoustic Emission technique has some unique attributes in that it can sensitively detect subtle frictional movement, corrosion and crack extension at some distance from its origin. Relying on the structure as the wave guide to transmit the naturally generated stress waves from their source to the AE sensor the technique is equally relevant to monitoring internal problems where access cannot be readily gained and other technologies may not be suited. Multiple AE sensors are used to discriminate against unwanted sources of activity and focus attention on regions of interest.
